A shark devours the arm of a child and presented an Egyptian tour guide at the Sharm El Sheikh resort


A Ukrainian tourist, her child, and an Egyptian tourist guide who was accompanying them were attacked by a shark last weekend in the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh overlooking the Red Sea in Egypt, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Environment.

The Associated Press said that the attack resulted in the loss of the arm of the 12-year-old Ukrainian child, while the tour guide who accompanied the family lost one of his feet.

The Egyptian Ministry of Environment said in a statement posted on its official Facebook page, Tuesday, that the attack took place on Sunday when the two tourists, who are a mother and son, and their tour guide were conducting diving operations in the Ras Mohammed reserve.

The ministry added that the attack caused their injuries and they were subsequently transferred to a nearby hospital, and said that the initial investigation showed that the injured were attacked by a two-meter long shark, which is a type of oceanic white-fin shark.

The statement stated that Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, gave her "instructions to stop all human activities in the vicinity of the attack, in accordance with the international practice in cases of shark attacks on humans, which is a precautionary measure to ensure that the attack on other people does not recur during the days following the accident."
