According to a study by the National Health Security Agency, nearly 4% of the 33,000 kinds of electronic cigarette liquids sold in France contain banned ingredients.

That's just over a thousand non-compliant vaping products.

This is an unprecedented study published on Wednesday by the National Health Security Agency.

In this report, ANSES examined the list of ingredients contained in the 33,000 kinds of electronic cigarette liquids sold in France.

And almost 4% of these e-liquids contain prohibited ingredients.

These ingredients are banned because they are carcinogenic, likely to promote genetic mutations, or toxic to fertility or the development of the fetus.

These substances are listed on the label, but should not be marketed.

More prohibited ingredients than in conventional cigarettes

That's just over a thousand non-compliant vaping products.

And as a percentage, there are three to four times more prohibited ingredients in these liquids than in conventional cigarettes or cigars whose dangers we know.

Users can go to the ANSES website and see if the brand of the product they are using is on the list of those containing prohibited ingredients, and thus decide to change brands.

Four out of ten vapers compose their own mixture

While this study makes it possible to better assess the health effects of electronic cigarettes, gray areas remain.

Four in ten vapers compose their own mix, and manufacturers of products that do not contain nicotine are not required to declare the list of ingredients.

The next step is therefore to study the toxicity of each of these substances.

It is ongoing, and expected in early 2021.
