The Greek philosophers talked about the utopian city, then Sir Thomas More’s book came in 1516 to describe that happy island, which he called “Utopia,” and it has all the comfort and happiness for its citizens, and in our Arab world, the Iraqi poet Nazik al-Malaika came to mention the utopian city a lot. Thoughts on my mind while attending a seminar by the President of the Royal Society of Arts in Scotland, Jimmy Kwok, who talked about the universal basic income system, the concept is that the state gives its citizens a stable and unified basic income, sufficient for the basic needs of citizens, whether they are They work or not.

The idea is not new, it has existed since man knew the system of states and government, and in ancient civilizations, but what is new about the matter is that some countries have already begun to take actual steps towards reviving this concept, such as Brazil and Argentina, and there are initiatives in Finland and Switzerland, and in Scotland as well.

Will comprehensive basic income eliminate the problem of poverty?

It is possible, but the most important thing is that this income, although not large, but it will ensure the satisfaction of the basic needs of the citizen, and therefore no one will steal in order to feed his children, and people will not kill each other for a small sum to satisfy their livelihood, when a person thinks about his daily food and his needs The main thing is that the selfish side appears in it, and the prevailing slogan becomes “psychological and psychological,” even if he stole or committed a crime, and there are a large number of countries whose inhabitants live below the poverty line. In fact, countries such as “Malawi” do not find the inhabitants what they eat except grilled mice. Two months ago, there were meetings with people, including the Minister of Health, who said: If people do not find anything to fill their thirst, then what else do they do.

There are opponents of the idea, as it will cost the state treasury huge sums of money to implement this system, and this may lead to people being lazy and lax about work, as some do not enjoy ambition and are not occupied by contributions to society, as long as their basic needs are met, but on the other hand, the social benefits of this system are And security is very great, as the crime rate will decrease, and there will not be an exaggerated disparity between social classes.

The topic is worthy of study and discussion, especially during the Corona epidemic crisis, which left behind many who cannot earn a living for their day, and now live on donations and charity, if any, and the future threatens more challenges, due to the automation of business, the control of robots, and thus Abandoning many of the jobs that people used to do, and then the comprehensive basic income system may be a lifeline.
