Several weeks of anger reached a climax on Thursday with large protests in the city of Lagos.

The demonstrators protested against the Special Anti Robbery Squad, which is accused of kidnapping, harassment and extortion.

During the call, several protesters were shot dead by security forces, Amnesty International reports.

"People have been posting about this online for several years"

Nigeria's greatest female artist Tiwa Savage was one of the participants in the protests.

The artist Falz also participated and took a leading role.

That is why we have now taken to the streets and we want the government to listen, he tells CNN.

International artists support the protests

Other artists who have gone out and supported the protests include Celine Dion, Drake, Trey Songz and Kanye West.

"I stand with my Nigerian brothers and sisters to stop police brutality, the government must be held accountable to the crying people."
