  • Covid-19 Spain exceeds one million confirmed cases of coronavirus

The infections continue to run wild and mark another record of infections since the end of the state of alarm, reaching more than 20,000 in one day.

The highest figure during the first wave was close to 11,000 infections.

After Spain surpassed one million people infected by coronavirus this Wednesday, the latest report from the Ministry of Health published this Thursday

shows 20,986 confirmed cases since yesterday.

Of these,

7,953 are diagnostic tests performed

in the last 24 hours (the rest correspond to PCR that were done in previous days but whose positive result had not yet been recorded), 1,839 more than on Wednesday.

Most are located in Madrid (2,213), Aragon (1,063) and the Basque Country (879).

In addition, the official document has added 155 deaths to the total figure in our country,

which rises to 34,521

.

It should be remembered that the deaths in residences have yet to be integrated into the overall figure.

In the last week, 570 people have lost their lives to the virus.

"In the European Union the pandemic is going very fast", has warned Fernando Simón, who has advanced that several countries will exceed in

the coming days the limit of one million cases that Spain crossed on Wednesday.

Regarding the Spanish situation, Simón has indicated that

"we are going up a little more slowly than other European countries

", although he has warned that "we do not know what is going to happen in the coming days, it can clearly go towards up".

"We cannot know the increase, but we are clearly going up," he summarized about Spain.

Regarding the occupation of ICU beds, Simón has indicated that "at least six autonomous communities have more than 35% occupation", in reference to the limit set by the Interterritorial Council.

"It is important to guarantee the application of the control measures in the strictest possible way," insisted the epidemiologist.

"There are things that should make us reflect."

Simón also highlighted the data of the positivity of the tests, which in our country is "four times higher than the thresholds established by the European Union".

"The diagnostic effort is good, the evolution of the epidemic is not as good as we would like", he summarized: "In general, Spain is getting worse."

In this sense, the Health spokesperson recalled that, while last week there were between 30 and 33 territories in decline or stabilized, this week the number has been reduced to 28.

Castilla y León and Madrid are the regions that have recorded

more than 100 deaths in a week, with 110 and 109, respectively

.

Andalusia has accumulated 60, followed by Aragon, which has 54. Galicia registers 45;

the Basque Country, 33;

Navarra, 31;

Valencia, 28;

Asturias, 20;

Extremadura, 17;

Canarias, 14;

Catalonia, 12;

and Castilla La Mancha, 11. Likewise, Cantabria reports seven deaths in the last week;

Murcia and La Rioja, six;

Balearic Islands, four;

Melilla, two;

and Ceuta, one.

The cumulative incidence (AI) -number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days- also continues to rise.

Of the 269 that Health notified only a week ago, it has gone to a rate of 348 cases

.

More than half of the communities exceed this average, being the ones that worry the most Navarra, whose AI index remains above

1,000 cases

(1,058), Melilla (883) and Aragón (629).

Today's report does not find the parameter of hospitalized patients registered in the last week and how many patients have been transferred to the ICU in the same period of time.

Currently, 14,160 people are admitted for covid, 462 more than on Wednesday and almost 2,500 more than a week ago.

In addition,

1,966 patients are in intensive care units (the day before, 1,930).

Regarding the care capacity of hospitals, the average number of beds occupied by patients with coronavirus in Spain, without

including other pathologies, is 11.80%

.

Intensive care beds present a higher percentage: 21.85%.

The regions that are of greatest concern in this regard are, once again, Madrid, whose occupation in this hospital unit is 58% (we insist that this is a percentage that includes only patients with coronavirus, excluding those suffering from other diseases ).

Ceuta is close, with 47% and, in third place, Aragon, with almost 41%.

All communities have registered an increase in infections this week compared to the previous one.

Where this rise is most perceived is in Cantabria, which has gone from notifying 374 infections between the 8th and 15th of this month, to 850 in the last seven days, more than double.

The curve of positives in Catalonia is also worrying: today it has reported 17,924 infected since October 15, a figure well above the 10,477 a week ago.

At the European level, Spain follows in second place in number of infections.

Russia is the only country that surpasses it, also with more than one million cases (1,431,635).

In third and fourth positions are France and the United Kingdom, with 957,421 and 789,229 positives, respectively.

In addition, the United Kingdom remains in the lead in number of deaths (44,158), followed by Italy (36,832) and Spain (34,521).

Regarding the incidence of the virus in the European countries that have accumulated a greater number of confirmed cases, Belgium continues in first place with an alarming rate of 893 positives.

The Netherlands, on the other hand, has an AI of 545 infections.

For its part, France registers 426 and, at a very short distance, is Spain, with 341 infected per 100,000 inhabitants.
