• Children: 10 fake towns for a real getaway

  • Album The 10 Most Beautiful Small Towns in the World

An

English

tavern

, a mill converted into an Automobile Museum, two churches, a river running through the village ... So far everything one would expect from a typical town in the

English countryside,

if it weren't for strolling through its streets and perfectly trimmed hedges one can't help but feel like

Gulliver in Lilliput.

Because

The Model Village

is an exact 1: 9 scale replica of the pretty town of Bourton-on-the-Water, in England's Cotswolds.

This miniature town would have been perfect for

Jonathan Swift's

Lilliputians

,

who were barely 6 inches tall.

Detail of the stone houses.

Built in

stone and outdoors

in the 1930s at the initiative of the owner of the

local boarding house The Old New Inn,

the craftsmen in charge of the project took five years to complete.

It was inaugurated on the coronation day of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the late Queen Mother), May 12,

1937

.

SEVEN YEARS TO BUILD SEVEN 'MINICOTTAGES'

Since then it has been one of the main tourist attractions not only in the town, but in this region to the northwest of London.

Such was its success that in 2014 The Model Village was expanded with seven

cottages

created by

miniature specialist John Constable

.

Each

cottage

took at least 12 months to build.

Thousands of miniature bricks and stones, coconut fiber ceilings, tiny beams, windows, intricate doors ... each and every piece was

handcrafted

and proportioned by Constable, using special tools of his own design.

The seven

cottages

are displayed in a garden adjoining the Model Village designed by Vicki Atherton, the current owner of The Old New Inn.

But this ode to the miniature world does not end here.

The Model VIllage opened in 1937.

A

covered exhibition

also accessible from the Model Village shows scenes of

traditional English life

(in miniature, of course) with characters in motion, from market day to morning at school.

More than a hundred of England's leading miniaturist artisans participated in the creation of this exhibition.

The icing on the cake is found on the High Street, where the Model Railway Exhibition is located, a 122 m2 model with more than

40 British trains

and from other places in Europe.
