China News Service, Fuzhou, October 19th. Title: Chinese Lacquer Paintings in the Ancient Houses of Fuzhou: Crossing Thousands of Times

China News Agency reporter Lin Chunyin

The Chinese lacquer art with a history of 7,000 years has evolved into an amazing category of painting art—Chinese modern lacquer painting in the past few decades.

On the 19th, the lacquer art works and contemporary lacquer paintings exhibited in the Furong Garden in the historical and cultural district of Zhuzifang, Fuzhou City, Fujian Province clearly demonstrated this contextual evolution.

On October 17, collector Lin Zhengjia presided over the revitalization of Fuzhou Furong Garden as the official opening of the Shen Shaoan Lacquer Art Museum in Fujian Province.

The Furong Garden, which was built in the Southern Song Dynasty, is known as one of the four famous gardens in Fuzhou.

In recent years, the local government has invested in repairs and restored the style of southern gardens with several tons of sea reefs unique to Fuqing, Fujian.

Also hosted by collector Lin Zhengjia, it was revitalized as the Shen Shaoan Lacquer Art Museum in Fujian Province. After several years, the renewed Fuzhou old house and the beauty of the lacquer were released at the same time.

The reporter walked into the Furong Garden and watched the lacquerware and lacquer artworks collected here, and couldn't help but linger.

Between the walls of the cloister, there are nearly a thousand pieces of lacquerware made by famous locals such as Shen Shaoan Zhengji, Xunji, Lanji, Li Zhiqing, Gao Xiuquan, etc.

A group of contemporary lacquer paintings have just finished their overseas tour in Spain and are also exhibited here.

Chen Jinhua, director of the Lacquer Painting Art Committee of the Chinese Artists Association, told reporters that Chinese lacquer painting has developed very vigorously in recent years.

The discussion on the language of lacquer painting has formed a strong national cultural appeal.

"The rich, gentle, graceful, solemn, mysterious, and profound oriental aesthetic characteristics and artistic language of lacquer painting have determined that lacquer painting has become the most traditional art category with national characteristics."

Chen Jinhua said that the Chinese lacquer paintings that have been touring overseas in Spain and the UK in the past two years have caused a sensation there.

When the exhibits are shipped back, there are often notes from many collectors and art lovers requesting purchase and contacting the painter.

While the regional style of Chinese lacquer painting gradually became clear, modern lacquer painting also gained fame in Asian countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Japan, and South Korea.

As a hometown of overseas Chinese, Fujian is closely related to overseas, and some collections reveal this inextricable "fate".

Tang Zhiyi, a lacquer painter born in Fujian, said before his work "Heaven Boat" that he saw these two "quaint and desolate" canoes from Chiang Mai, Thailand a few years ago. On the boat, he was inspired to get this work.

The reporter once visited this place with Li Wenru, the former vice president of the Palace Museum.

Li Wenru also admired the coexistence of Fuzhou's ancient houses that "completely embodies the elegance of wood" and the thick and gorgeous lacquer artworks.

He believes that this promotes the integration of old buildings into contemporary life, and the lacquer art also leaves a classic texture for urban aesthetics.

Lin Zhengjia, the founder of the Shen Shaoan Lacquer Art Museum in Fujian Province, said that he has spent many years working hard to rescue the traditional lacquer art in Fujian.

I am very happy to see that Furong Garden is now revitalized as a lacquer art museum and a living aesthetic space for Daqi, giving art the opportunity to enter the public.

I also hope that this place will help Fujian lacquer art to go international.

According to Wu Zhiyue, the director of the Fujian Museum, the collision between Fuzhou’s ancient houses and Chinese lacquer paintings just shows the vigorous and diversified development of non-state-owned museums in China.
