In an exceptional organization, with the participation of 1,024 publishers, from 73 countries, accompanied by 60 Arab and foreign writers and thinkers, from 19 countries, who present 64 dialogue events and specialized cultural seminars, the activities of the 39th session of the Sharjah International Book Fair, organized by the Sharjah Book Authority this year, will be launched under Slogan: "The world reads from Sharjah", during the period from 4 to 14 November, at the Expo Center Sharjah.

This came during a press conference held by the Sharjah Book Authority yesterday, the facts of which were broadcast live on the "Zoom" platform, during which each of the: Chairman of the Sharjah Book Authority, Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, Advisor to the CEO, General Manager of a telecommunications company in the Northern Emirates Abdulaziz Tarim, Director General of Central Operations in Sharjah Police, Brigadier General Dr. Ahmed Saeed Al Naour, and Director of Sharjah Channel, Salem Al Ghaithi, in the presence of a number of official, cultural and media figures from different countries of the world.

The conference witnessed the launch of the Sharjah Reads Platform, which will host all the cultural events organized by the authority (remotely). The events accompanying the exhibition will be the first events it hosts to be a window for the event’s audience from different countries of the world.

Precautionary measures

Visitors to the exhibition will have an appointment with thousands of books presented by Arab and foreign publishers, as part of preventive measures, as the authority has taken a number of precautionary measures, which are in line with the decisions of the UAE to prevent the spread of the virus, and the exhibition will provide sterilization gates and thermal wipers distributed at all entrances and exits of the Expo Center. And work will be done to sterilize the exhibition halls, lobbies and corridors for five hours a day.

In view of the current circumstances, the Sharjah Book Authority announced the cancellation of the opening ceremony of the exhibition and the postponement of the distribution of prizes and the honoring of creative winners to next year’s session.

The authority stressed the need for everyone to adhere to the procedures followed in relation to physical spacing, wearing masks, working on continuous sterilization, and other prevention requirements, as a group of volunteers at the exhibition will supervise the observance of the stipulated rules and precautionary measures, and an intelligent electronic system has been allocated to manage and organize Visits to the exhibition and publishing houses in four periods during the day, where visitors will be given a "bracelet" of different colors. Their period of presence in the exhibition will be determined based on their registration through the website sharjahreads.ae.

This year, the exhibition hosts 1,024 publishers from 73 countries, including 578 Arab and 129 foreign publishers, displaying more than 80,000 titles on an area of ​​more than 10,000 meters.

Egypt tops the list of participants with 202 publishing houses, followed by the UAE with 186, Lebanon with 93, Syria with 72, and Saudi Arabia with 46.

As for foreign publishing houses, the United Kingdom leads it with 39, followed by the United States with 29 publishing houses, in addition to 13 from Italy, 12 from France, and eight publishing houses from Canada.

Ahmed bin Rakkad Al-Ameri said: “The organization of the exhibition, this year, coincides with exceptional circumstances that the world is going through, due to the spread of the new Corona virus, so we wanted to reiterate that reading is able to triumph over distances and variables, as it is through which we enter worlds New, and enhances the confidence in us that we are able to dream, creativity, and work ».

Al-Amiri added: “This year's session starts from a slogan that carries the message of the Emirate of Sharjah, and its civilizational project, which was established by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. The slogan he raises: (The world reads from Sharjah) comes to confirm that our need is Knowledge does not and will not end, and that the book will continue to bring us together, whatever the circumstances.

The social media platforms of the Sharjah Radio and Television Authority will cover the most important events of the exhibition and transmit them to the public, and the Media Training Center will offer a series of remote workshops, which highlight the best practices of desktop publishing, the arts and skills of graphic design, script writing, and other valuable knowledge. .

Publishers Conference

The exhibition hosts, this year, the tenth session of the "Publishers' Conference", which brings together 317 publishers and 33 speakers from different parts of the world to present 11 realistic and virtual sessions, to identify the most important issues concerned with the advancement of this industry, and over a period of three days, from the first And until the 3 of next November, at the Expo Center Sharjah.

Libraries Conference

The authority announced the holding of the seventh session of the Libraries Conference, in partnership with the American Library Association, during the period from 10 to 12 November. All sessions of the conference (remotely via the "Zoom" platform) will be held for three hours a day, with the participation of 12 speakers, and 300 Specialist and librarian from around the world.
