Due to the corona pandemic, the categories for the Tony Awards look different.

All Broadway shows were shut down in March, resulting in fewer nominations than usual.

As a result, Aaron Tveit is the only nominee in the category of best male lead for his performance in the Moulin Rouge !.

There he plays a young poet and writer in the early 20th century, based on Baz Luhrmann's film from 2001. Although he is the only person the jury can vote for, victory is not a given as he must get at least 60 percent of the votes.

The play Slave play breaks records

In the category of best musical, however, comes Moulin Rouge!

only in second place with 14 nominations.

Most have Jagged little pill with 15 pieces, which is an interpretation of Alanis Mosrisette's debut album from 1995.

It premiered in December 2019 and only had time to play for just over three months before Broadway was shut down.

The play Slave play, by Jeremy O Harris, receives 12 nominations, which is a Tony record for a play.

The Tony Gala usually takes place in June, but now it has been postponed indefinitely.

Broadway is expected to be closed until at least the summer of 2021.
