In the largest sale of its kind ever, the price of a small falcon in Saudi Arabia exceeded $ 170,000 in an annual auction held over 45 days for a bird of prey of prestigious status in the Gulf states.

Auction organizers at the Saudi Falcon Club said in a statement that the bird was sold on Tuesday for 650,000 Saudi riyals ($ 173,000) due to its unique features and rarity.

The club described the sale as the largest in the world for a bird of the small Shaheen breed.

Falconry, which is the tradition of falconry and training for hunting, is an important part of the desert cultural heritage in Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries dating back thousands of years.

Falcons can exceed 300 kilometers per hour, but have become internationally recognized as an endangered species.

The club stated that the falcon, weighing 1.1 kilograms, was caught in the wild in Hafar Al-Batin in northeastern Saudi Arabia.

The auction began on October 3 and runs until November 15, and is organized by the Saudi Falcon Club, which was established in 2017 with the support of the government, with the aim of preserving the activity that represents the country's ancient heritage.
