Covid-19 indicators are worsening with more than 100 dead and 193 people admitted to intensive care over 24 hours, according to figures released by Public Health France on Wednesday.

The number of deaths attributable to the epidemic is on the rise with 104 deaths in hospitals in 24 hours (87 the day before), bringing the total death toll since the start of the epidemic to at least 33,037 people.

New intensive care admissions have been on the rise for several days.

7,000 patients at the peak of the epidemic

The 193 patients admitted over 24 hours on Wednesday followed 226 patients on Tuesday and 171 on Monday.

This indicator is particularly observed by the authorities who fear an influx of patients who would clog emergency and intensive care departments.

The number of Covid-19 patients hospitalized in intensive care rose to 1,664 on Wednesday, 31 more than the day before, specifies the online database of Public Health France.

The current national capacity is around 5,000 intensive care beds.

The daily number of intensive care admissions fell below 200 patients for the last time on April 21.

The highest, at 771 admissions, was recorded on April 1, according to official data.

At the peak of the epidemic in early April, more than 7,000 patients were hospitalized in intensive care, mainly those who needed to be placed on artificial respiration.

This number then fell sharply until the end of July, before rising steadily.
