While the curfew, the flagship measure of the president's intervention on Wednesday, will be introduced in nine metropolises from Saturday, professional athletes will be able to benefit from exemptions.

Sporting matches must nevertheless be played behind closed doors after 9 p.m.

Professional athletes will benefit from a derogation in Ile-de-France and in the eight cities where a curfew has been declared from 9 p.m. from Saturday but the competitions will be behind closed doors if they take place after 9 p.m. hours, AFP learned from the Sports Ministry on Wednesday.

"There will be a possibility of derogation, with or without an audience depending on the time of day," the ministry was told, after Emmanuel Macron's announcement of the establishment of a curfew to stem the pandemic of coronavirus.
