The UAE Board on Books for Young People donated 1500 books to three damaged libraries in the Lebanese capital, as part of the "Kan Yama Kan" initiative launched by Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Vice President of the International Publishers Association and Chairman of the Advisory Committee of Sharjah, the World Book Capital for the year 2019, to restore and develop a number of libraries Damaged as a result of the Beirut port explosion.

The initiative targeted each of the "Al-Bashoura", "Jeitawi" and "Mono" library, which is run by the non-governmental association "Al-Sabeel" active in supporting public libraries in Lebanon to be free for all. The initiative also included organizing a series of open reading sessions in public places near the libraries. During the event, the council hosted the writer Samar Barraj and the painter Sinan Hallaq, in the presence of a number of Beirut children.

The initiative included field visits to the council’s delegation, during which they were briefed on the conditions of the libraries and their surroundings, as well as during which an art poster embodying a painting entitled “Sawa Returns the Pulse to the Heart of Beirut” was signed by artist Sinan Hallaq, and written by writer Samar Barraj, which included creative messages that reflect the love of the people of Beirut To their city, in which she said: “To Beirut, with all love, beautiful Beirut, where the warmth of hearts mixes with the heat of the golden rays of the sun, Beirut, our steadfast city that will not die. Together we will build you, so that you can return to life, full of joy and life.”

The head of the Emirates Board on Books for Young People, Marwa Al-Aqroubi, said: “In light of what happened in the Lebanese capital, a number of libraries were affected and many of the shelves lost their contents. That is why we were keen to provide this modest support and contribute to reviving these libraries, and returning part of the books to their place, to leave an impact. Even a little, in restoring the cultural and creative glow of a city that has its cultural and creative place in the whole human conscience.

The President of Al-Sabeel Association, Eng. Ziad Boualwan, thanked the Emirates Board of Books for Young People for this generous and important gift, which it will place within the reach of children upon the reopening of the libraries to be available for reading and free loaning.

He added, “There is no doubt that this gift will help us move forward in accomplishing the mission for which the Assabil Association pledged its work and effort: encouraging reading, developing imagination, stimulating creativity and critical thinking, and all of this can only be achieved with the presence of a qualitative book that we put in the reach of readers, especially the young ones. This is what distinguishes the books of the (Kan Yama Kan) campaign. ”

He also reiterated his thanks to Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi for her wonderful humanitarian initiative.
