Is it good to drink coffee before eating?

And to drink everything before breakfast?

The doctor and health columnist of Europe 1 Jimmy Mohamed answers these questions in "Without appointment".

The little coffee when you wake up is a gesture shared by many of us.

But is this really the ideal?

Not really, according to a University of Bath study published in late September in the British Journal of Nutrition.

But then, what behavior to adopt when waking up?

What to drink

 What is a good coffee?

What does this new study tell us about coffee?

In this study, 29 participants had to undergo three things.

The first: a normal night's sleep.

They wake up.

They are given an energy drink that has the same caloric value as breakfast.

Then these people are made to sleep, but not very well.

We wake them up every hour for five minutes.

They are also given this drink.

And then, we do a third experiment.

We do exactly the same.

They are woken up every hour for five minutes.

But this time, we give them a coffee right away.

Then, after the coffee, we give them the energy drink and we realize that people who have taken the coffee on an empty stomach have a 50 times higher glycemic response.

So their blood sugar is less well regulated than the group who slept normally or who slept poorly, but who ate breakfast first.

The conclusion of these researchers is therefore that if you have had a bad night, you should first eat and then drink coffee.

We therefore suggest trying to shift the time when we take our coffee or at least eat before.

Otherwise there might be a subsequent risk of insulin resistance, diabetes.

There is not necessarily a link, it is an association and not a correlation.

We have to be careful but for now, we would suggest having breakfast, then a coffee.

Should you still drink when you wake up?

A small intake of liquid, whatever it is, helps to open the appetite in the morning.

It stimulates the stomach and therefore, at this time, to eat breakfast and avoid feeling hungry around 10 or 11 o'clock.
