Nazism and the horrific consequences of World War II have been a recurring theme in Steve Sem-Sandberg's writing.

It is the theme of "The Chosen Ones", as well as in his 2009 novel "The Poor from Lodz" that depicted the downfall of the Jewish ghetto in Wodz during World War II.
