Everything was prepared so that the popular

festival of the patios

of Córdoba was celebrated the first half of May, the traditional month, but the

coronavirus pandemic

caused the fair to be canceled.

At least, physically, since it was carried out over the Internet.

Then, a

360º route

was even organized

through its main locations.

DATES OF THE CELEBRATION

But it is not the same to see it on the Internet than to enjoy it live.

For this reason, the city has set to work to be able to celebrate during the month of October

this tradition that started in 1921.

Thus, the main courtyards of the Andalusian city will be decorated with bougainvillea, carnations, geraniums, roses and petunias

from October 8 to 18.

Everything, in order to live that celebration declared a

Festival of National Tourist Interest.

In addition, since 2012 it has been an Intangible Heritage of Humanity by Unesco.

CONTEST FOR NEIGHBORHOODS

For this, the owners of the most emblematic patios have decorated in detail this part of their homes to participate in the

neighborhood contest

organized by the City Council, which awards the most beautiful ones.

Of course, those responsible for the Consistory are aware that they will not be able to reach the one

million visitors

(exact figure: 984,099) that the fair had in May last year.

However, they do aspire to encourage tourism during the

next 10 days

in the city, which has been so hit in recent months.

OTHER ACTIVITIES: PERFORMANCES, TAPEOS AND TASTING

At the same time, a festival is held with folkloric performances where local

singers and dancers come together.

And everything, accompanied by typical local tapas (salmorejo, fried aubergines, flamenquines or ajoblanco cannot be missed) paired with

Montilla-Moriles wine,

the characteristic fine of the province of Córdoba.

SIX DIFFERENT AND FREE ROUTES

The City Council promotes six different routes whose

entry is free,

starting with the most characteristic neighborhood to experience the festival, the

Alcázar Viejo

, located between the fortress itself and the parish of San Basilio.

The rest of locations are distributed by the neighborhoods of Santa Marina-San Agustín;

Regina-Realejo;

San Lorenzo;

Santiago-San Pedro

and

Judería-San Francisco.

In the surroundings of the

Mosque-Cathedral,

the aforementioned Jewish quarter has some of the oldest specimens.

One of the most beautiful, however, is that of the

Palacio de Viana

, which has 12 different patios in its elegant facilities.

The fair could not be held in May due to the pandemic.

As for specific addresses, you have to go through those located in the streets Trueque, 4;

9;

Rey Heredia, 22;

.

In addition, they will have to go together and keeping their distance with the rest of the visitors.

For their part, the members of the Association of the Patios de Córdoba, created in 1997 to promote the festival and

raise awareness of the need to help the caretakers

of the patios throughout the year, also encourage the population to enjoy the festival extreme the necessary sanitary norms.

The celebration is declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest.

HISTORY OF THE PATIOS

The presence of this type of construction in the city dates back to the Romans and later to the Muslims.

Due to the hot climate, the inhabitants of the city adapted the organization of their

popular houses

to the needs, centering the house around a patio that normally had

a fountain in the center

and, in most cases, a well that it collected rainwater.

The Arabs gave the model a twist, giving an entrance to the residence from the street

through a hallway

and placing abundant vegetation to increase the feeling of freshness.

Since then, there are

two types of patios

.

The first is that of the

single-family houses

, where the rooms are distributed around it and that is usually cloistered and has a paved or

mosaic paved floor

.

The second courtyard, that of the

tenement house

, is less popular.

It usually has two floors, with which continuous balconies, stairs and roofs are used.
