More than 18,129 cases of coronavirus have been diagnosed in 24 hours, according to the latest report from Public Health France published on Thursday.

In total, 1,418 people are in intensive care, twelve more than the day before, a new record since May.

Almost 10% of them are in hospitals in Bouches-du-Rhône.

At the peak of the epidemic, in early April, more than 7,000 patients were hospitalized in these departments, mainly those who needed to be placed on artificial respiration.

Four cities placed on high alert

This number then fell sharply until the end of July, then evolved in a range of between 350 and 400 patients until the end of August, before resuming a constant increase.

The current national capacity is around 5,000 intensive care beds.

Hospital stays, which also include somewhat milder forms of the disease, continue to increase continuously (7,603, +89 compared to the previous day), including 711 new admissions.

These figures were published shortly after new announcements from the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, who places new cities, Lyon, Lille, Grenoble and Saint-Etienne on maximum alert from Saturday.

The incidence rate of Covid-19 stands at 116 per 100,000 inhabitants, and the test positivity rate (proportion of positive people out of all those tested) is increasing to 9% against around 1% during the deconfinement, he said.

Since yesterday, 77 people have died from the disease.
