Portugal wants to dazzle the world with an architectural record.

To do this, it will inaugurate at the end of this month the 516 Arouca, the longest suspension bridge in the world,

516 meters long

and only suitable for pedestrians.

It has more figures to impress, since it rises

175 meters above the Paiva River,

belonging to the Portuguese town of Aroca (hence its name),

about 60 kilometers southwest of Porto.

There, locals and strangers will soon be able to enjoy the benefits of a landscape of

wild nature

that sneaks in through an

open

metal mesh

platform

.

Its more than half a meter long will make it the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the world as

soon

as it

opens

, thus

displacing

the

Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge

in the Swiss valley of

Zermatt

, which is 494 meters long and 85 meters high. at its highest point.

There are more similar records, such as the longest (and most impressive) glass bridge in the world, opened just a few weeks ago in China.

Construction delay

The views from the new Portuguese bridge are its main attraction for those who do not suffer from vertigo.

Not in vain, it is immersed in the

Arouca Geopark

, included in the Unesco network of this type of natural monuments.

From there you can see the Aguieiras waterfalls,

the Paiva river gorge

or the beautiful Areinho beach.

The 516 Arouca is more than half a kilometer long.

In addition, this area of the north of the neighboring country is famous for the

hiking trails

that can be done.

As an example, the wooden walkways known as

Passadiços do Paiva,

one of the jewels of the place, stand out.

The 516 Arouca has suffered several delays in its construction, since the works were scheduled to begin in 2016, but they had to be delayed for more than a year due to the

complicated orography of the area,

which made it impossible to bring the necessary machinery there.

The engineering company in charge of the work, Itecons, had to save

vertigo unevenness, in

addition to working the

rigid mesh

of the railings.

The cables, meanwhile, are made of steel, while

Views of the area, 60 kilometers from Porto.

At the beginning of this year, the bridge was practically finished, in the absence of some details.

Furthermore, the

Arouca City Council

, involved in the project, wanted to inaugurate it this summer, but had to postpone it until the end of October.

There is still no specific date for the opening day,

nor is it known how much the ticket will cost.

What those responsible do not doubt is that it will be a tourist success that will put the region on the map even more.
