  • Getaway: 10 destinations in Portugal that you can reach by car

This year there have been many Spaniards and Portuguese who decided to stay in the

Iberian Peninsula

during their vacations because of the pandemic.

And instead of going to the coast, they headed to rural destinations in the interior where you can enjoy

outdoor activities

with little overcrowding.

An example of the pull of this formula are the

Portuguese

Historical Villages

, in the Central region of the neighboring country, with almost full occupation this summer: it is a network of

twelve villages

, which in some cases, such as Linhares da Beira or Sortelha, barely arrive to a hundred inhabitants.

Rincón de Cedillo, one of the Extremaduran towns of La Raya.

With the limitations imposed by the pandemic, "

new customers

have arrived" to this type of destination

, mostly from both Portugal and Spain, and "now we hope that they will remain as regular tourists for years to come," says Pedro Machado, President of the Portuguese public entity Turismo Centro.

Machado insists that the main foreign market in the area is Spanish, which now represents 30% of international tourism and that this year it has started an upward trend.

GREAT TRIP TO THE VILLAGE

In these villages time seems to have stopped.

And beyond the obvious advantages over urban destinations, escaping to town is a return to origins and

authenticity

, respect and enjoyment of

nature

, customs that resist the passage of time.

It is not that we have now discovered rural tourism, but that this formula relegated to the

weekend getaway

has been revealed as a

comprehensive vacation plan

with options ranging from adventure sports, gastronomy, wine tourism ...

Such is its success that the network of Historic Villages is working with the border province of

Cáceres

to export this model to some towns with similar characteristics in this Spanish area.

The Cáceres council will identify a dozen villages to design a model of

Historic Villages of La Raya

and increase its projection in the Iberian space.

Plaza Mayor of San Martín de Trevejo, in Cáceres.

The objective is to create the

Great Route (GR) of the Historic Villages of La Raya

-the border that Spain and Portugal share-, which can be

traveled on foot

or by different means of locomotion.

in addition to

expanding the great route GR 22

through the lands of Cáceres to turn it into a true eco-cultural corridor between all these territories of exceptional heritage, archaeological and landscape richness.

As the project progresses, the region finalizes new plans to remain a safe zone in times of

Covid

.
