Demonstration experiment to confirm the effect of "virus decomposition" with fluorescent light Kitakyushu October 5, 19:46

A demonstration experiment has begun in Kitakyushu City to confirm the effect by spraying substances that decompose bacteria and viruses in the air when exposed to light such as fluorescent lamps into hotel rooms.

In the laboratory of Professor Teruhisa Yokono of Kyushu Institute of Technology, in collaboration with a medical equipment manufacturer in Fukuoka City, we are conducting research on a substance called a photocatalyst that decomposes viruses and bacteria in the air when exposed to ultraviolet rays, such as fluorescent lamps and LED lights. We have developed a new photocatalyst that has the same effect with light.

An experiment to confirm the effect of this photocatalyst began on the 5th at a hotel in Kitakyushu.

In the experiment, a photocatalyst is sprayed on the walls and ceiling of guest rooms and restaurants, and the number of bacteria and viruses is regularly observed for about two months to check the pace of decrease.

According to Professor Yokono, in previous experiments conducted elsewhere, the flu virus was reduced to 1/1000 in 6 hours.

Professor Yokono said, "The point is whether it can be effective in the state where people usually live, so I would like to investigate in various environments."

In addition, President Toshihiko Kuroki of JR Kyushu Station Hotel Kokura, where the experiment is being conducted, said, "Since we are dealing with invisible viruses, we would like to consider further safety and security initiatives, including such photocatalysts." ..
