• Kenzo spring-summer 2021 collection presented in Paris

Kenzo died yesterday at the American Hospital in Neully-sur-Seine after contracting the virus that plagues the world.

Yesterday, Sunday, the death of the sewing master, who had

lived in Paris since the 60s, was reported.

Very discreet with his personal life, he was not a regular character at parades or events that are held in the world of fashion.

Of the same generation as Valentino or Armani,

Kenzo on the contrary disappeared from the public scene and rare are his appearances in front rows and photo alls since he left the firm 21 years ago.

Creator of a very

personal style, his designs were fully recognizable for their color and bohemian air, always inspired by that oriental spirit, full of sensitivity and delicacy.

Today the firm's creations do not resemble the first ones in Japan, and are aimed at a young audience, who are looking for practical and sports clothing.

Its beginnings

Kenzo Takada was born on February 27, 1939 in Himeji, near Osaka, and from a very young age he became fond of drawing and sewing thanks to his sisters.

He arrived at the port of Marseille by boat in 1965 and from there he moved to Paris,

being fascinated by the creativity and passion for fashion that was lived in the city of light.

So much so, that he decided to settle permanently in the French capital when he had not yet taken the first steps of his career.

Initially, she sold her sketches to the couturier

Louis Féraud,

who had opened a couture house on the elegant Rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré, and to

Jacques Delahaye.

But he soon got to work on his first collection for women, which he presented in 1970. He had made it at the Vivienne gallery, obtaining great success for its extraordinary coloring and its new way of understanding ready-to-wear.

He followed his own dictates, it

was a free verse that conceived fashion as a dream.

Six years later, he moved his small workshop to a larger location on the Place des Victoires and there he founded the brand under his name.

Today, the firm's showroom remains in that location.

Success perfumes

It was in the year 83 when he launched his first men's line and five years later what would be the first of a great chain of successes: the

Kenzo Kenzo

perfume

.

Today, Kenzo perfumes are among the best sellers in the world, among them, the famous

Flower by Kenzo (year 2000),

represented by a poppy, curiously the flower that has no aroma.

The renowned Spanish nose Alberto Morillas was its creator.

All the fragrances of the house, in minimalist bottles with an oriental air,

breathe respect for nature and are inspired by elements such as water, wind, rain ...

In 1993, Kenzo sold his firm to the French luxury conglomerate LVMH and in

1999, just 30 years after his first show, Kenzo Tabaka announced his retirement.

Several designers have been in charge of it since then.

The Italian

Antonio Marras

was the creative director of the brand from 2008 to 2011, followed by

Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, creators of Open Ceremony.

Since last year it is the Portuguese

Felipe Oliveira Baptista,

formerly in Lacoste, who signs the parades.

His is the renewal of the Kenzo logo.

The latest collection, presented this week in Paris, under the title

'Bee a Tiger',

alluding to the protection of bees (bee) and the tiger, the representative animal of the brand.

A collection inspired by the firm's archives, always characterized by fun and optimism, "the true fuel of the creative process".

Today Kenzo, who owns two stores in Barcelona and Madrid, continues to identify himself by his strong colors and daring prints.

In 2018, singer Britney Spears was the face of the brand.

One of his great commercial successes was the tiger sweatshirt, a

favorite of many instagramers.

"With his nearly eight thousand drawings, the Japanese creator has never stopped celebrating fashion and the art of living," Kenzo's official spokesman said yesterday.

The mayor of Paris, the Spanish Anne Hidalgo, for her part, expressed on Twitter her immense sadness at the death: "A creator with immense talent, he gave color and light its place in fashion.

Paris today mourns one of its sons".
