After nine seasons of

The Walking Dead

and five of the spin-off

Fear the Walking Dead

, Robert Kirkman's zombies are invading a new series.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond

, available this Friday on Amazon Prime Video, follows the adventures of two sisters, the wise Iris (Aliyah Royale, seen in

The Red Line

) and the fearless Hoppe (Alexa Mansour, seen in

How to Get Away with Murder

), two teenage girls belonging to the first generation who grew up after the apocalypse in the enclosure of a secure area, safe from the living dead.

With the help of their friends Felix (Nico Tortorella, seen in

Younger

) and Elton (Nicolas Cantu, seen in

The Good Place

), the two young women will leave their cocoon in order to find their father, braving the threat at the same time. zombies and the adults of this mysterious organization whose famous three-ring logo was seen on the helicopter taking Rick Grimes into the mother series… This new mythology strangely resonates with our daily life in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

The pandemic "created an interesting thing"

The release of the show, initially expected in spring 2020 on the American channel AMC, was postponed, due to a pandemic, in the fall.

“We were putting the finishing touches on the last two episodes in post-production when the pandemic struck,” Matthew Negrete told

20 Minutes

in an interview via Zoom.

But this postponement "created an interesting thing," said the showrunner.

In this series you have young people who have been confined to this space when they just yearn to live out in the world.

They feel a bit locked in.

"

"Parallels that are impossible to ignore"

If, obviously, the writers did not anticipate the pandemic, "there are parallels that it is impossible to ignore," said Matthew Negrete.

Much of season 1 is made up of flashbacks to the apocalypse, the night it all collapsed: “There are clues to what the government did or didn't do and what the military did or did not do.

It challenges the systems in place today when something like this happens.

"

And to continue: “There is this aspiration, I think, at least for me personally, to make so that the world becomes again as it was before.

There has been a change in life and experience, and everything looks different now.

The characters on the show go through a lot this way.

But in hindsight, again, because obviously we didn't know this was going to happen.

We had finished writing Season 1 when the pandemic arrived.

"

"" Stand By Me "was a great source of inspiration"

The Walking Dead: World Beyond

is also a teenage show, a coming-of-age story.

“One of my favorite films from the 1980s is

Stand By Me

, which follows children who go on adventures and learn about life and themselves, and who come back from that quest.

They are very different and have grown up in a certain way.

And this film was a great source of inspiration for me, ”says the showrunner.

“When you're a teenager, all emotions are heightened.

If someone tells you something wrong, it feels like your heart is ripped out and your chest torn, ”says Matthew Negrete.

Except in the hostile universe of

The Walking Dead,

"zombies can really tear your heart out."

This metaphor is no longer metaphorical at all for the characters in the series.

And these feelings of adolescents with the apocalypse in the background, it was irresistible to me, ”he continues.

"We started from zero"

You don't need to have seen the other series in the franchise, the story works independently from the others.

“We are discovering brand new characters in a whole new corner of the universe that comics have never entered,” says the showrunner.

And to add: “The development around this organization called CRM [Civic Republic Military, which can be translated as Civic Republic Military] has never been part of the comic book either.

We started from zero.

"

In

The Walking Dead: World Beyond

, Julia Ormond plays the troubled Elizabeth.

“She's the head of this great organization, or at least she's one of the leaders.

I wanted someone who has presence, and at the same time vulnerability.

For me, Julia embodies it all, ”comments Matthew Negrete.

A rather unexpected role for the British actress: “I watched

The Walking Dead

with frenzy when Matt and Scott [Mr.

Gimple, The Walking Dead Universe Content Manager at AMC] approached me.

I loved !

I really looked into whether the world created around the characters was solid.

As an actress, you are looking for different roles and I had the impression that I had never played this type of character before, ”the actress told

20 Minutes.

A character that may interest fans of

The Walking Dead

universe

curious to know what fate the CRM has reserved for the iconic Rick Grimes!
