The Xi'an moat, which began at the end of the Tang Dynasty, embodies the wisdom of ancient Chinese military, architecture, and culture.
In modern times, the moat has been transformed from a fortification with high walls and deep trenches into a "functional canal" for rainwater and sewage collection and flood control and storage, and assumes the heavy responsibility of urban sewage discharge.
With the increase of cultural protection awareness, since the 1980s, Xi’an moat has undergone three large-scale treatments, which has improved pollution and water quality to a certain extent. In 2003, Xi'an officially launched the moat scenic area upgrading and reconstruction project, and the "major operation" of "treatment of both symptoms and root causes", successively reconstructed the Changlemen to Jianguomen test section and the Jianguomen to Zhuquemen comprehensive upgrading and reconstruction demonstration section.
After the accumulation of construction experience in the previous sections, starting in 2019, the remaining 8.4 kilometers from Andingmen to Anyuanmen to Changlemen have been reconstructed.
Nowadays, the whole line of the moat not only contributes to Xi'an a 14.6-kilometer "longer version" of the water platform, it has also achieved the goal of "clear water, green banks, solid embankments, and smooth floods".
