A virtual celebration of International Coffee Day

The Sharjah Heritage Institute has virtually organized, through its social media platforms, a celebration on the occasion of the International Coffee Day, which falls on the first of October of every year, with the participation of the institute's branches in each of the Kalba branch, the Dhaid branch, the Khorfakkan branch, and the Dibba Al-Hisn branch.

The head of the Sharjah Heritage Institute, Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Musallam, said that “coffee has a privileged position in the Emirati society throughout history, and this prestigious position is still present today, as it is the title of generosity and hospitality, and is presented according to the principles, etiquette, rituals, customs and methods.”

The event included the presentation of videos about coffee, in which it was discussed about its position in the Emirati society throughout history. Dr. Mona Bounama, Director of the Content and Publishing Department at the institute said: “Coffee is a symbol of generosity and hospitality for Arabs in the past, and hardly one house is free of it. Arabs in their solution and travel, and it is the most famous drink in the world at all ».

Dr. Mona added: “Rituals and etiquette appeared in drinking it, then the café phenomenon spread in Europe and the Arab world, and in December 2015, UNESCO included Arabic coffee on the Representative List of Intangible Heritage.”

Dr. Saeed Al-Haddad, director of the Sharjah Heritage Institute branch in Kalba city, said, "Coffee is not only drunk and not poured, but rather has many stories and stories, the most famous of which is the dawn coffee that has a story that begins with the sound of a rooster crowing."

Arabic coffee was included in the list of intangible heritage.
