Météo France has placed the Alpes-Maritimes, Var, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Hautes-Alpes in orange vigilance for the next few hours in view of "a Mediterranean episode of high intensity" for the day Friday.

A switch to red vigilance is even possible during the day on the Côte d'Azur.

The alert is activated for “thunderstorms” and for “rain-flood” phenomena.

“In the morning, stormy showers come up from the Mediterranean.

These thunderstorms can be accompanied by violent gusts of wind with vortex phenomena, violent downpours and sometimes even hail ”, note the forecasters.

Up to 250 mm of rain locally

In the Alpes-Maritimes, where the prefecture decided to close schools on Friday, and in the Var, the rainfall amounts expected on the episode until Saturday morning are of the order of 100 to 150 mm over large areas with locally 200 to 250 mm.

A risk of "waves of submersion" for which the two departments are on yellow alert is also expected from Friday afternoon.

In the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Hautes-Alpes, rainfall should be less with 50 to 80 mm in general and 100 to 130 mm in places.

Five years ago, almost to the day, a Mediterranean episode, with up to 195 mm of precipitation in the center of Cannes, resulted in the death of twenty people on the Côte d'Azur.
