Disney announced a sequel to the movie "The Lion King", signed by Barry Jenkins, director of "Moonlight".

Despite the lukewarm reviews of critics, this 3D version of the popular animated movie was a success upon its release in the theaters in 2019, grossing more than $ 1.6 billion in the world thanks to the participation of stars who lent their voices to the characters, such as Beyoncé.

The movie, centered on the adventures of the Simba cub, who tries to avenge his father’s death, has become the most profitable business of copies updated by Disney, with an estimated budget of $ 250 million.

It is expected that those in charge of the film's sequel will use the same technological recipe adopted in the first version, which mixes old cinema techniques with virtual images.

Disney did not disclose any history or detail related to this new project.

Barry Jenkins - who with "Moonlight" won the Best Picture Oscar in 2017 - said he grew up with the "Lion King" characters when he helped his sister care for her two children in the 1990s.

"The opportunity to collaborate with (Disney) to enrich this story of friendship, love and sustainability while continuing my mission of expanding the representation of the African community is an impossible dream," the African-American director said in a statement.

The company did not disclose details related to the new project.
