Recently, a team of researchers at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia has created a bionic device that combines smart phone-style electronic devices with microelectrodes implanted in the brain to restore vision to blind people.

The team is currently preparing for the world's first human clinical trial of a bionic eye.

The device is called the Gennaris Bionic Vision System and includes a custom helmet equipped with a camera and wireless transmitter, a vision processor, a software and a 9x9mm microelectrode patch that needs to be implanted in the brain.
