  • "We are three times more likely to be contaminated in a bar than in a normal business", assured Jean Castex in "You have the floor", Thursday evening on France 2.

  • The Prime Minister is based on a study published in early September by the American health authorities.

  • Even though the study suggests that consumption in bars and restaurants is "a significant risk factor" for contracting Covid-19, the chief executive has made some shortcuts.

Bars close at 10 p.m. in several cities from Monday.

Roll back the complete curtain for restaurants and bars from Sunday evening in Marseille.

Two emblematic measures of strengthening the health measures taken by the government to fight against the spread of the coronavirus, while the epidemic continues to progress in France.

Guest this Thursday of the program You have the floor, on France 2, the Prime Minister wanted to justify this turn of screw: “From a certain hour, the bars see arriving many people who are without mask, and who do not respect barrier gestures.

We are three times more likely to contaminate ourselves in a bar than in a normal store.

A few minutes later, Jean Castex indicated that this probability was twice as high in a restaurant.

But where do these numbers come from?

The data comes from a study released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in early September, the US federal agency responsible for public health.

This publication was also the subject of an AFP dispatch on September 10.

The study involved 300 people who came to be screened in eleven hospitals in the United States.

She concludes that subjects who tested positive for the coronavirus were twice as likely to have gone to a restaurant or a bar in the previous two weeks than negative cases.

The difference was even more marked in the category of people who had attended one of these establishments without having had any known contact with Covid-19 patients.

The authors of the study therefore formulate this observation: “Consuming on site in establishments offering food or drink could be a major risk factor for Sars-Cov-2 infection.

"According to Pascal Crepey, epidemiologist at EHESP (School of Advanced Public Health Studies), the conclusions of this study are convincing:" The increased risk does exist, but this result needs to be clarified by larger studies.

"

"It is difficult to go into scientific details"

If the orders of magnitude mentioned by the Prime Minister are coherent, the study does not however relate specifically to the “chance” of contracting the virus.

She is studying the presence of the virus in groups of patients according to the places frequented during the days preceding the test.

In other words, she points out that twice as many positive patients have been to a restaurant or bar than negative subjects.

“It's hard to go into scientific detail on a prime-time TV show.

It is necessary to be clear for the televiewers, concedes the entourage of Jean Castex.

The CDC's conclusion is, however, in line with the executive's decision: “Efforts to reduce possible exposures where mask use and social distancing are difficult to maintain […] should be considered to protect customers , employees and communities.
