The Penelopes and Virginie Ledoyen -

Laurent Koffel

They sing the story of a breakup, of the loss of a loved one.

Axel Basquiat and Vincent Trémel, from The Penelopes, invited actress Virginie Ledoyen to sing with them.

Affliction

is the perfect harmony between the suave voice of a cinema icon and the music of an electo-rock group.

Available this Friday, the title will be part of the

Actress

disc

, an album scheduled for November, which already brings together actresses Isabelle Adjani and Asia Argento.

While waiting for the future release of a title with Nathalie Baye ...

“In one afternoon, without repeating too much, the song was recorded,” The Penelopes

 told

20 Minutes

about their duet with Virginie Ledoyen.

Easy recording

“We met an hour before the recording to briefly discuss the song's intentions and lyrics.

We were a little impressed at the idea of meeting Virginie, admits Axel, singer and songwriter of the group.

Fortunately, thanks to her smile, she broke the ice in one fell swoop ”.

For the actress, who only really discovered the two musicians after receiving their collaboration proposal, there was no particular apprehension.

"Axel and Vincent had worked a lot upstream, they knew my range, I liked the song, so I only had to slip into a case".

“She threw herself into the Anglo-Saxon project.

We wouldn't have had the courage to do it, ”says the group.

Only one afternoon was necessary for the recording of the title.

A simple recording that the boys conducted with an iron fist in a velvet glove.

“When you work with people who know what they want, authority comes naturally.

If something was wrong, we would do it again in a very simple way, ”explains Virginie Ledoyen.

Because for "the most relaxed guys in the world", music is a matter of pleasure.

They don't care about having to run a business or risk becoming bad people.

“At the age of seventeen, we met The Cure at an afterparty.

The bassist told us "have fun" but it was fuzzy.

Ten years later, we finally understood that we had to have fun with music ”.

A dream duo

For Virginie Ledoyen, this participation in an album is not a first.

Do you remember his exquisite voice whispering to us “this child looks like you” on the

Elles & Barbara

tribute album

, or his appearance on the title

Happiness

by Adam Cohen?

Entering the musical universe of an artist is a pleasure for the actress, allowing her to abandon her profession of actress for the time of a song.

“Very often I am made to sing at the Gainsbourg, in spoken-sung, but Axel and Vincent offered to really sing to a melody.

It was really attractive, especially since Axel has a voice as deep as mine ”.

This rhythmic track, tinged with melancholy, is the story of a separation.

Both sad and hopeful, he asks the question of surviving the departure of the loved one.

A theme that touches Virginie: “I may have had sorrows.

A love story that stops is a small death.

This song perfectly conveys what one feels in these moments ”.

Melancholy is a recurring subject in the Penelopes' repertoire.

We find her in the songs

Meet Me By The Gates

, recorded with the most popular actress in French cinema, Isabelle Adjani, and

Dream Baby Dream

, in a duet with the enigmatic Asia Argento.

Two songs which, along with

Affliction

, will appear on the album

Actress

, to be released on November 27.

Each title of the disc will be an opportunity to discover in music the voices of personalities they admire.

"We wanted to make a record with very intelligent actresses, on edge, not hit-girls who are only in the image, who have no background, but women who, singing, know unveil their soul ”.

This album will be an opportunity for Axel and Vincent to make their comeback on stage after the cancellation of a series of concerts that they did not have time to announce in the spring.

Virginie Ledoyen is a priori reluctant to join them.

Never mind, the group will do everything to convince her.

"We'll go so far as to drag her with us," they burst into laughter.
