Two days after the announcement of the closure of gymnasiums and sports halls, the Ministry of National Education clarified the situation this Friday: all French students will continue to have physical education and sports classes (EPS ).

Faced with the spread of the epidemic, Olivier Véran, the Minister of Health, announced a new series of restrictions on Wednesday evening, including “the closure of sports halls and gymnasiums” in reinforced alert zones and maximum alert zones.

A distance of "at least two meters" between students

"When there is a gymnasium within the confines of a school establishment, PE lessons can continue to take place there by respecting the protocol in force", indicated the entourage of the Minister of Education Jean- Michel Blanquer.

In recommendations published at the beginning of the year, the ministry had specified that wearing a mask was not possible during physical practice and that a distance of "at least two meters" between students should be respected, "except when the nature of the practice does not allow it ”.

Indoor swimming pools closed

For classes that take place in an outdoor gymnasium, run for example by a community, discussions are still ongoing.

Can school audiences continue to use the gymnasium?

A decree specifying things is expected within 48 hours, according to the ministry.

Whatever happens, the PE lessons will continue within the establishment or outside, he assures us.

As for the swimming pools, Prime Minister Jean Castex announced their closure on Thursday evening.

"At this stage, they will remain open for" professionals "such as Insep (National Institute of Sport, Expertise and Performance) or students in Staps (sciences and techniques of physical and sporting activities)", we tell the Ministry of Education.

For school audiences, discussions continued on Friday with the Minister of Health.
