Major destruction operation in Le Havre (Seine-Maritime).

Customs officers destroyed 40,000 plush lions and puppies that could "cause very serious lesions or even perforations in the intestines," the General Directorate of Customs announced on Thursday in a press release.

The stuffed animals were destroyed on Wednesday by “crushing and incineration”.

"These toys, tested by the customs / DGCCRF laboratory in Lille, have turned out to be dangerous," the same source said.

Laboratory analysis

The stuffed animals had been intercepted "in August" from China "and were intended for a company based in the Paris region".

Arrived on August 5 at the port, some of the toys had been sent for analysis to the Lille laboratory and the load "blocked pending results".

“The expert report mentions numerous non-conformities and in particular seams three times less resistant to traction than the standards in force, letting out magnets nearly four times more powerful than the maximum authorized and of a size allowing their ingestion by children ”, specifies the General Directorate of Customs.

“In view of these elements, it was decided to proceed with the destruction of the lot, under the control of the customs services.

This type of non-compliance is particularly dangerous because these magnets, if they are accessible and ingested by accident, can cause very serious lesions or even perforations in the intestines ”, she stressed.

"Surprisingly, the importing company provided customs with documents issued by a testing laboratory in China showing these toys as compliant," according to the same source.
