La Tricyclerie is also interested in bio-waste from individuals.

The association opened a first relay point in the Olivettes district -

La Tricyclerie

  • At least two players have recently embarked on waste collection from Nantes families.

  • At the same time, the network of collective composters is developing at high speed while the town hall is also tackling the subject.

They take up about a third of our trash cans.

But what to do with your fruit and vegetable peelings, withered flowers or other green waste when you live in an apartment?

This question, Camille Marhadour-Savary has heard it a lot.

In an attempt to save them from incineration and give them a new life, the Nantaise has just launched Ouivalo, a system that allows individuals to get rid of their bio-waste free of charge at collection points (there are three for the moment in Nantes, two new ones will soon open) or partner stores.

“The goal is for the process to be easy, integrated into her daily journeys,” explains the 26-year-old entrepreneur.

All you have to do is come with your bucket and throw its contents in the bin provided.

You can also exchange your full bucket for an empty one ”.

The team then comes regularly to collect them to send them to Compost in Situ, a local company which recovers them.

"Many requests"

One example among other composting initiatives that are being launched in the city or are gaining momentum in recent times.

On the same principle as Ouivalo, the Tricyclerie has also decided to open up to individuals.

This summer, the association, which until then only addressed itself to restaurant owners, installed a small locked shed in the Olivettes area, which subscribers (from 8 to 15 euros per month depending on the volume chosen) can come. fill with peelings.

"We had a lot of requests, and the confinement further accelerated things, assures Margaux Bourrigault, in charge of the project.

The results are positive since in a few weeks, we have already collected around 100 kg thanks to about twenty households.

The objective is to open six or eight other points by the end of the year, to cover the various districts of Nantes.

Unlike Ouivalo, La Tricyclerie produces its own soil, thanks to the seven tons of food waste that it collects on average by bicycle every month.

Solutions for everyone in 2023

Simple services which should motivate more and more Nantes residents to take the step of composting, even if thousands of households had already started.

This is evidenced by the impressive network of collective composters (in public gardens or courtyards of buildings, for example) installed with the help of the Compostri association, which continues to grow.

By the end of the year, the network will have 300 composters throughout the city, supplied by some 6,000 households in the metropolis who generally meet once a week to maintain it.

The town hall of Nantes is also taking up the subject, while local authorities will have the obligation to offer all residents, by 2023, solutions to recycle their bio-waste.

With this in mind, the city relaunched a few days ago an experiment started last year with 1,500 households in Nantes Nord.

Thirteen collection points have been installed in the district, supplemented by a door to door service.

"Beyond the figures (600 kg of food waste per week), sorting actions are rather very well followed thanks to all the teaching that we do with the inhabitants", welcomes Mahel Coppey, city councilor (EELV) waste, the circular economy and social innovation.

And at the other end of the chain, market gardeners from La Chapelle-sur-Erdre are associated.

"Even on a larger scale, it will be necessary to ensure that a proximity loop is maintained", insists the elected official.
