Blood stocks are at their lowest for ten years, alert the French Blood Establishment on Wednesday.

Nearly 20,000 bags of blood are missing, due to the coronavirus crisis which has prevented mobile blood drives.

The French Blood Establishment (EFS) sounded the alarm on Europe 1 on Wednesday: blood stocks were at their lowest for ten years.

Nearly 20,000 bags of blood are missing to reach the usual average reserve.

This shortage is mainly due to the health crisis caused by the coronavirus, which reduced the number of collection points, but also to the wishes of donors.

"The situation is delicate", deplores Hervé Meinrad, the director of collection and production of the EFS.

"Our collection is organized around a hundred mobile collections, which represents 80% of collections. We also rely on collections organized in companies and universities. Since the start of the crisis, collections have been very low. , because people are teleworking or students follow their courses remotely. This represents a loss of 100,000 donations since the start of the crisis, "he explains.

"We have to go up quickly, because we can start to have difficulties if we stay long in this area," warns Hervé Meinrad.
