Over the years, the Snösätra industrial area has become a place for street art and cultural events.

But a third of the area will be demolished to make way for nature reserves and parks.

On Tuesday morning, work began on taking down buildings - and the murals that adorned them.

It has been called a cultural murder by the association Snösätra kulturkvarter which is active in the area.

- It's boring.

This is a sanctuary for graffiti.

It is a good option for those who want to paint legally.

You do not have to be good at painting.

Anyone can come here.

It is simply a sanctuary for art, says graffiti artist Johan.

"Is there a decision in the council"

Despite repeated complaints and demonstrations, the decision stands.

- We tear down because there is a decision in the council that about a third of Snösätra industrial area will be converted into a park and nature reserve, says Gunnar Jensen, department manager at the Development Office.

Why did it take so long before the demolition work started?

- Contractors must be procured and the entire implementation must be planned.

I do not know if it's that long, but it's the time it's taken.

"It is a free art form that should be encouraged"

When SVT visits Snösätra, the residents of Huddinge, Raivo Kask and Anne Iital, walk through the area.

They are out for a walk and looking at the art.

- I think it's great that it exists.

It's fun to see that the graffiti is still alive.

It is a free art form that should be encouraged and it is sad that you hide this.

Not many people pay attention to it, says Anne Iital.

- We have been graffiti fans all our lives.

It is a pity that our politicians do not have a greater understanding of this artistic form.

You usually see that they paint over and spray away with some means.

It's sad, says Raivo Kask.
