It was in 2018 that the chief conductor of The Metropolitan Opera House was fired after 40 years at the renowned opera house.

Three men accused the conductor of sexually abusing them when they were teenagers.

Answered by suing

An internal investigation found evidence that the chief conductor was guilty of "sexual exploitation and harassing behavior" and he was therefore fired.

The chief conductor responded by suing The Metropolitan for more than SEK 51 million for breach of contract and defamation.

A year and millions of dollars in court costs later, it ended in a settlement, when The Metropolitan paid the conductor, though not as much as he sued them.

It reports The New York Times.

The details have not been known before because there was a confidentiality agreement that prevented both parties from revealing what the agreement looked like.

Opera badly out financially

The settlement took place before the corona pandemic forced the opera house to remain temporarily closed.

Many members of the choir and orchestra have been unpaid since April, and according to The New York Times, the opera is now fighting for its economic survival.

The conductor denies the allegations.
