An Indian opens the belly of his pregnant wife with a sickle to find out the gender of the expected fetus

Police in northern India arrested a man after he cut his pregnant wife's stomach with a machete, seriously wounding her and killing her male fetus, according to police and the woman's relatives.

In the wake of the attack on Saturday, police in Budaon, Uttar Pradesh, said the wife was in intensive care in a hospital in the capital, New Delhi.

Her brother, Gulu Singh, said the assault was caused by the husband's desire to know the gender of the fetus.

The couple has five daughters.

"He attacked her with a machete and slashed her stomach, saying that he wanted to verify the gender of the fetus," Singh told Reuters.
