• Covid kit: the five essentials for going back to school

  • Prevention: approved masks do not need a filter

It was the month of May when the Dutch, always seasoned in these matters, published a guide on coronavirus and sexuality.

Shortly after, in June, the New York Department of Health published a guide with similar characteristics.

What has happened in Spain?

Perhaps because sex is still a taboo subject in some forums, here we have taken a few months to "get our hands on it".

This week the Public Health Agency of the Generalitat of Catalonia has published a document with questions and answers entitled "Sex and COVID-19".

Fortunately, and as "the bug" does not understand borders, the three "guides" coincide in their general lines.

This decalogue summarizes everything you need to know before having sex in times of coronavirus.

The coronavirus is not primarily transmitted sexually

According to the latest update of the scientific-technical information from the Ministry of Health, our friend SARS-CoV-2 has been searched in semen without, in general, having been found.

It is true that it has been detected, as if we were looking for Wally, in a small number of patients in the acute phase of the disease.

But this does not mean that the infection can be transmitted sexually, since the viability of the virus in semen has not been demonstrated.

Furthermore, there is no case in which other transmission possibilities have been ruled out.

We also know that other coronaviruses are not easily spread through sex.

Therefore, although it cannot be ruled out, sexuality is not a common way of spreading COVID-19.

Sexual practices can pose a risk of transmission of the coronavirus

That SARS-CoV-2 is not easily transmitted through sexual fluids may be good news.

But we cannot ignore that sexual practice, except for extraordinary anatomical-circus skills, prevents us from keeping a safe distance.

Breathing, kisses and other various gas-salivary exchanges also obviously pose a risk of transmission of the coronavirus.

Sex with partners: the safest option

The NYC guide states that you are your safest sexual partner (yes, washing your hands well).

Beyond onanism, all the guides agree that the best option is to have sex with other people.

This was relatively easy to assume in "pandemic first" when we thought that physical distance measurements were going to last two newscasts.

Overall, who can't wait two weeks?

But in the scenario in which we find ourselves, and since things are going on for a long time, it is necessary to consider what would be the safest options when we open ourselves to relationships with third parties.

Finding a "pandemic partner" is a possible solution

Given that the guides are committed to minimizing sexual relations with people who are not living together, if you are going to "skip" the recommendation, a possible solution is to choose a "stable partner" for this time.

That is, a person you trust and who is adopting security measures similar to yours on a daily basis.

At this point, it is advisable to talk openly with the chosen couple about what their lifestyle is being, the people they frequent, what are the safety measures they adopt in their day to day, etc.

And of course, how you are on the day of the meeting.

When in doubt (headache, cough ...), abort mission.

Negative in an antibody test or PCR is not a 100% guarantee

So-called "serological passports" or "immunity cards" have never been a good idea.

Neither from the ethical or scientific point of view.

It is important to be cautious when using these tests to make decisions about who to have sex with.

Results of antibody tests are not definitive proof of immunity.

With regard to PCR, let us remember that the action protocol for close contacts indicates keeping quarantine even if the result of the PCR is negative.

Zero risk does not exist, even if the disease has passed

Today there are still many unknowns to solve about immunity and coronavirus.

The possibility that a person who has already had the disease can be reinfected and transmit the virus again, even without symptoms, is not ruled out.

Therefore, no person can call themselves "covid free" and the fact of "having antibodies" does not give you a "free bar" for sexual relations with third parties.

Better outdoors or at least with good ventilation

One of the proposals that has attracted the most attention within the recommendations of the Generalitat has been to have sex in the open air.

This does not mean that we should take the parks or the balconies for our sexual recreation but, rather, make use of the patio of our house, which is private.

We are in September and well it goes ... but particularly for November I can't see it clearly.

Winter is coming

, so let's focus on airing the spaces before and after sex.

Imagination and new technologies

2.0 has come to invade everything.

Even sex.

The guides propose considering "sexting", virtual dating or "sexual zoom parties" as alternative ways of enjoyment.

It is not the same, but less gives a stone.

The best prolegomena: showering and hand washing

All the guides agree on the importance of personal hygiene, before and after relationships (something that was already important before the pandemic).

Ah!

And watch out for sex toys: they are the great forgotten and also deserve their share of soap and water.

The condom still exists

Now it seems that "everything is coronavirus", but sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, gonorrhea, syphilis or chlamydia are still lurking.

That the use of the mask does not distract us from the use of condoms whenever necessary.
