  • The Discord platform has been welcoming networked players for the past five years to facilitate their online games.

  • For some time now, yououtubers have taken it over and brought together tens of thousands of Internet users.

  • This new tool allows them to multiply ties with their community.

Do you remember the confinement?

This period when aperitifs with friends were on Discord, teachers' classes were organized on Discord, and video game fans found themselves on Discord?

Perhaps you did not suspect, while you were munching olives with friends, that thousands of people were also gathering on the platform.

What do they have in common?

A YouTuber.

Discord gained momentum during the health crisis, and now has more than 100 million active users.

But before the Covid-19 stuck the whole world in front of a screen, gamers were already connected to it.

The platform, created in 2015 by a young entrepreneur, targets Internet users who want to get together around a game of video games.

Thanks to Discord, they can chat by voice while connected to

Minecraft

or

World of Warcraft

.

With its quick configuration and intelligible features, the software conquers experts.

The favors of the gaming community

The platform, whose logo also resembles a console controller, is also of interest to those who make video games a full-fledged activity.

Over time, French-speaking YouTubers seize on it and create their own server.

This is the case of Bronol, a videographer with more than 200,000 subscribers on YouTube, who proposed to his community to come together on Discord in July 2019. “The goal was to provide a space where players can meet, play, progress together and discuss, ”he sums up to

20 Minutes

.

Today, they are more than 24,000 to be registered.

The main advantage of Discord is undoubtedly the proximity that the application allows to establish between yououtubers and their subscribers, even when they have more than 200,000 fans on their channel.

Ney, another content creator specializing in gaming, launched his server in order to “chat with [his] community, play with them and ask them for their opinion from time to time.

"Thanks to this space, enthusiasts can compete in tournaments and share a network game with their favorite YouTubers, like friends.

"The people who join your Discord are there for you, to talk to you and not to troll," notes Ney.

Get away from the haters

We don't teach you anything if we tell you that social networks are plagued by insults, trolls and haters.

A few weeks ago, Bronol also decided to delete its Twitter account “so toxic is this network.

"On Discord," even if there are some who try to come to break the atmosphere "according to Bronol, the risk of being insulted is less.

“There are a lot more haters on Twitter and YouTube,” Ney says.

To avoid any escalation of hatred within servers, YouTubers are arming themselves with moderation teams.

In particular, they allow the rare malicious users to be banned almost instantly.

With more than a thousand users logged in at a time and an ever increasing number of subscribers, server owners regularly recruit new Guardians of Benevolence.

What future can we expect for Discord within YouTube?

Is the platform doomed to remain known only to the circle of gaming?

For Ney, it "becomes more and more popular every day and new people are arriving on the application", which could give it a new dynamic.

Same story with Bronol, who thinks that "it will become more democratic in the future and that it will no longer be seen as" a gamer thing. "

It is now the turn of beauty, lifestyle or humor youtubers to seize it.
