Queen Elizabeth II stripped Harvey Weinstein of the honorary title she was bestowed on him before his sexual crimes were revealed.

The formerly influential Hollywood producer, who is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence for rape, was awarded this honor in 2004, in recognition of his contribution to the prosperity of the British film industry.

However, a statement published in the Official Gazette in Britain revealed that he had been stripped of this title.

The statement reads: “The Queen directed that Harvey Weinstein's appointment as Honorary Commander in the Civil Division at the highest rank in the British Empire be revoked on January 29, 2004, and his name removed from the aforementioned ranks record.

The honorary titles presented by the royal palace may be withdrawn if the latter deems that their bearer has degraded them, and the Queen personally gives her consent to these decisions.

This was the case, for example, with the Australian entertainer, Rolf Harris, who was imprisoned in 2014 for a series of sexual violations, or the former Zimbabwean president, Robert Mugabe, who lost his medal in 2008 as a result of “violating human rights” and “degrading” democracy. According to the British government, the same is true for the Romanian dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu, who was stripped of the title in 1989 the day before his execution.

In 1979, the art historian Anthony Blunt, who had been an advisor to the Queen, was stripped of his title after revealing that he was a Soviet spy.

Most of the time, the decision to divest was taken following convictions and prison sentences.
