On September 16, a symposium to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Beijing World Women’s Conference and the 5th anniversary of the Global Women’s Summit was held in Beijing on the cause of poverty eradication and the role of women in the 21st century.

Pumzile Mlambo-Nuka, UN Deputy Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women, delivered a video speech.

In his speech, Nuka praised China's contribution to supporting women and promoting gender equality.

She said that since 2012, China has lifted about 41 million women out of poverty by increasing income and employment opportunities.

In China, 55% of new Internet businesses are created by women; China has also made significant progress in terms of equal education and access to sexual and reproductive health.

But on the other hand, Nuka said, we must also recognize the existence of challenges.

A new report by UN Women and the UN Development Programme shows that by 2021, about 435 million women and girls will be living in more severe extreme poverty, including 47 million who have fallen into poverty due to COVID-19 people.

Nuka said, "Considering these complex challenges, we commend the Chinese government for implementing relevant policies and measures after the outbreak, such as food distribution plans and corporate tax and fee reductions, to achieve the promise of poverty alleviation and improvement of social conditions."

She finally expressed her gratitude to China for all the work done and encouraged China to continue to play a leading role in poverty eradication and stand at the forefront of poverty reduction.
