  • A representative of Generation Nation, the youth movement of the National Rally, shared a photo with an erroneous caption, targeting migrants in the Moria camp, which caught fire in Greece last week.

  • This same shot had already been used by Nadine Morano in 2016, with a caption locating the facts in Calais

  • It is actually a photo taken in a migrant camp burnt down in Slovenia in 2015.

  • As for the Moria camp, an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fires, but the Greek government has hinted that the fires were started voluntarily by asylum seekers wishing to leave the island.

Disinformation has struck again.

Since its publication on Facebook last Friday, a photo has been controversial.

We see a smiling man taking a picture of himself in front of tents, one in flames and the second charred.

At first glance, not the ideal situation to take a selfie.

Yet here is what the legend says: “SCANDALOUS!

A migrant from Moria camp in Lesbos takes a selfie in front of the fire, more than 20,000 migrants are pressuring this Greek island to reach the European mainland by burning everything they can find.

The legend refers to the fire that burned down the Moria camp on the Greek island of Lesvos, where more than 12,000 migrants lived, to ashes last week.

The author of the publication, Enzo Alias, is used to unsourced posts against migrants, in particular.

But the 28-year-old man is mainly engaged in politics: he is the national delegate for mobilization at Generation Nation, the youth movement of the National Rally.

Under the photo, viewed to date more than 15,000 times, xenophobic and racist comments abound, some even calling for murder.

Messages which could constitute an incitement to racial hatred.

FAKE OFF

But where was this photo taken?

A reverse search shows that this photo is much older than the Lesvos fire.

Nadine Morano was already using this photo in 2016 to target, once again, migrants.

A so-called tradition of setting fire before their departure, according to our lax authorities.

Although many Internet users at the time pointed out to him that the photo had not been taken in France, the tweet is still online on the account of MEP LR.

Protests in… Slovenia

End of story, neither Enzo Alias, nor Nadine Morano have published reliable information.

Journalists from

Le Monde

had conducted the investigation when the photo was published by the former minister.

It actually dates from 2015 and was taken in the Brezice camp in Slovenia.

Its occupants were then not allowed to leave the site and were held there by the authorities.

According to the BBC, several tents had been set on fire by migrants revolted by the way they were being treated.

They were protesting the slow process of registration and travel to the Austrian border, as well as the lack of food, water and blankets in the camp.

As for the Moria camp, an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fires, but the Greek government has hinted that the fires were started voluntarily by asylum seekers wishing to leave the island.
