Gelada monkeys live in the highlands of Ethiopia -

BOROVALI ALI / SIPA

It does not swing from branches to lianas but the gelada gains altitude in another way ... The one we call the lion monkey lives in the highlands of Ethiopia which culminate at 2,000 meters above sea level.

Up there, no tree, but large expanses of grass which the gelada delights in when it does not find enough critters to nibble on the fur of its congeners.

If gelada is making a comeback, with its characteristic red patch on its chest, in the media scene, it is for a bad reason.

The expansion of farmland is cutting back on its natural habitat.

And gelada societies, built around a jealous and violent dominant male, are now under threat.

Find out more about gelada in this video from our partner Brut.
