With the discovery of thousands of extrasolar planets, the study in greater detail of the atmospheres of rocky planets, and especially those of sizes comparable to Earth, is proposed.

New telescopes, both in space and on the ground, will allow characterizing the chemical composition of their atmospheres in search of traces of life.

However, it is and will remain difficult to identify certain compounds in the atmospheres of planets distant from a few to millions of light years.
