The size of the financial losses resulting from cybercrime is expected to reach six trillion dollars in 2021, according to a statement by Hisham Okasha, head of the National Bank of Egypt.

Last week’s article dealt with the subject of technology’s control of human lives, and the danger of hacking data and human brains. A few days ago, a group of "hackers" infiltrated a number of British universities, seized student and worker databases, and requested sums from those universities in exchange for not leaking data. It has already released part of the student data, which is a very dangerous issue, especially in Britain, which is known for its keen interest in data confidentiality.

A colleague at one of those universities told me that the issue is more than just seizing records and extortion, but that this criminal group was able to control the university's systems, so that it controlled the system of locks and security, and therefore workers would not be able to enter the buildings, and students could no longer be registered. Or access the grades of registered students.

The topic has been repeated, and technology criminals have new methods and capabilities that are higher than the capabilities of some governments, and the same group has previously seized data from Tesla and many international companies, and it has published many files and secrets.

These are some of the negative aspects arising from the development of technology and dependence on it in every big and small part of our lives.

Therefore, it is important for our universities, and indeed all institutions in the Arab world, to pay attention to what is happening, and to create a cyber protection fence, in which countries' agencies contribute and invest in it, because the topic may be greater than the capabilities of financial or technical institutions. On the other hand, it is necessary to pay attention to courses. And information security qualifications, and expansion of training courses alongside academic programs.

It is also important for parents to encourage their children to join these programs, if the children have a desire.

Most sectors and jobs have been affected by the economic conditions that the world is going through, but it seems that the demand for specialists in information security and cybersecurity is increasing continuously. If we do not have the ability to produce technology, then at least we should not lose sight of ourselves learning to use it, benefit from it, and protect Ourselves and our economy from the impacts, consequences and threats that accompany this technology.

As a quick measure, I hope that every institution and every individual makes a backup copy of digital content, and make sure to preserve that content, so that we do not regret it too late.

We must also pay attention to the young generation to raise their awareness and sense of security towards the digital world, and to continue their roaming in the digital world.
