Masked men tried to break into the home of Belarusian writer and Nobel laureate Svetlana Alexievitch on Wednesday in Minsk, but she was protected by diplomats who were with her in the apartment.

Alexeyevich is now supported by Nobel Prize-winning colleague Olga Tokarczuk.

She writes on Instagram that she recognizes much of the situation in Belarus from the time when her own homeland Poland was under communist rule, and that she admires those who protest against the dictatorship.

She also writes that if it were possible, she would also stand outside Svetlana Alexievitch's house and defend her.
