Nothing is won yet in the face of fake news.

European Commission Vice-President Vera Jourova said Thursday that platforms should be more "accountable" and "transparent" in the fight against disinformation, and that it was "time" to take more restrictive measures against them .

The European executive on Thursday published an assessment of the implementation of a code of good practice against disinformation, launched in 2018 and signed by Google, Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft, Mozilla and more recently TikTok, as well as by representatives of the advertising industry.

"Platforms must be more responsible"

While underlining the advances made possible by this “very precious instrument, the first of its kind in the world”, the Commission “highlights certain shortcomings mainly due to the fact that the code is based on self-regulation”.

“Platforms need to be more responsible and accountable, they need to become more transparent.

It is time to move beyond self-regulatory measures, ”said Vera Jourova, in charge of values and transparency at the Commission.

“Europe is in the best position to show the way and to propose instruments for a more resilient and fair democracy in an increasingly digital world”, she added.

"Digital Services Act"

“The fight against disinformation is a shared responsibility, which the technology and advertising sector must fully assume,” said Commissioner Thierry Breton, responsible for the Internal Market.

Within the framework of this code, the signatories strive to reduce advertising opportunities for actors who engage in disinformation, to improve the transparency of political advertising, to prevent certain false speech from going viral, to put forward reliable information and collaborate with fact-checkers and researchers.

The European Commission is due to unveil new legislation by the end of the year (the “Digital Services Act”), a priority for the EU executive, which could set a global standard to better monitor how major platforms are operating. 'attack disinformation, manage personal data and expand their activities.
