Tiffany McDaniel wins the Fnac novel award for "Betty"

The prize for the novel Fnac was awarded on Wednesday to the American Tiffany McDaniel, a young author who in

evokes

 the fate of her mother of mixed Cherokee and white.

It is the first translation crowned since 2014 and

 by Briton Benjamin Wood.

A vast intimate account of the life of the modest inhabitants of southern Ohio, at the foot of the Appalachians,

recalls heavy family secrets.

“I had my father's eyes, and now I also had my mother's suffering.

I felt this pain becoming a solid body, something that - I was afraid - would always be there.

I cried thinking of his hands, so small, ”says the narrator.

A universal heroine

The novel, published by Gallmeister in French, was published in English in August.

This is the second of this thirty-something author, also a poet and visual artist.

"Through the voice of her young narrator, Tiffany McDaniel sings the restorative power of words and gives birth to a universal heroine", commented in a press release the jury, made up of 400 booksellers and members of the brand.

The Fnac prize goes to a novelist for the fourth consecutive year.
