This week, the shooting of the new Emigrants film starts in Västra Götaland.

Directed by the Norwegian Erik Poppe.

- Our story will not focus as much on the religious which is a very large part of the other Kristina's character.

These are more existential questions and relationships, says Lisa Carlehed who portrays Kristina.

A modern woman

Carlehed refers to Kristina Nilsson in the books, she who is a deep believer, home-loving and the one who does not resort to more.

So also in the 70's film by Jan Troell and to some extent in the 90's musical with music by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus.

But in the new film it will be different.

- It will be a much stronger Kristina who can finally stand up for herself in a different way than she can in the books.

It may not have been up to date when the books were written, but we have chosen to increase that, says Lisa Carlehed.

Gustaf Skarsgård, who plays Karl Oskar, does not mind being a little overshadowed.

- I think it is reasonable, if you are to update the story.

It is not about a feminist perspective but about getting very close to her and I think that is the right way to do it instead of doing a modern woman in another time, he says.

"Do Karl Oskar justice"

The story of the Emigrants is still read in school and has been lined with both Nobel Prizes and Oscar nominations.

Tackling it could reasonably lead to a lot of performance anxiety.

- No, not for me.

There is always pressure and expectations to make a good design.

But I do not feel that I should shoulder Max von Sydow's legacy, I do not place it in relation to his interpretation.

On the other hand, I feel a great deal of loyalty to the character from the books because I am also a Moberg fan, I also want to do Karl Oskar justice.

No Småland

Is there any fear of being compared?

- There is no fear, I

know

people will do it.

But it is not something I take into account, says Gustaf Skarsgård.

However, the Småland dialect is not something that the actors need to worry about.

- We will not speak Småland.

It's really nice !, says Lisa Carlehed and laughs.
