A group of between 20 and 25 bullfighting professionals -pickers, banderilleros and swordmen- have broken into the offices of the Seville State Public Employment Service (SEPE) this Monday morning, cornering its director, Enrique González,
whom They demand the aid denied to the bullfighting sector due to the cessation of activity forced by the covid-19
.
In this escrache, recorded on video by the interested parties, there have been moments of great tension.
The silver bullfighters have burst into González's office shouting that "bullfighting is culture"
and among the shouts one hears talk of "quotes", "discrimination" or "hunger".
The protest has taken place in a violent climate in which González has invited the authors of the protest to await the verdict of the courts.
The Toro de Lidia Foundation (FTL), together with the National Union of Picadores y Banderilleros Españoles (UNPBE), had already filed a criminal complaint against Enrique González after repeatedly denying bullfighting professionals the requests for extraordinary benefits presented.
Bullfighting professionals, the Foundation warned then,
"have been listed as artists in public shows since 1985
and until now they have not been able to access the extraordinary benefits approved in Royal Decree Law 17/2020 in Seville due to the systematic discrimination of the delegation".
Said decree, approved on May 5,
included extraordinary unemployment benefits aimed at the collective of artists in public shows
, among which are bullfighting professionals, included in the category of artist in public show since Royal Decree 1435/1985 , of August 1.
However, according to the FTL complaint,
"this benefit is being repeatedly denied by the SEPE office in Seville
.
"
According to one of the affected professionals, "the Provincial Directorate has ordered them to leave bullfighters out because we are not artists; they tell us that we are not within the cultural sector or simply because these benefits are not for bullfighters."
This escrache had a precedent in the protest called by the banderilleros before Minister Yolanda Díaz at the exit of a ceremony held in Toledo on July 25.
Said escrache coincided with the peaceful protest called those days
by the professional bullfighting sectors in front of the Ministry of Labor in Madrid.
