A 75-year-old hiker was killed Wednesday afternoon when he fell in the Massif de la Chartreuse in Isère, we learned from the High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon (PGHM).

The drama took place around 1 p.m. in the town of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse near the Col des Aures at 1,600 meters above sea level.

The victim, of French nationality, slipped and then fell over a 200-meter drop, it was added.

Rescuers were immediately alerted by a woman who accompanied the hiker, according to the same source.
